“I am the Lord, the God of all humankind. There is, indeed, nothing too difficult for me.” ~ Jeremiah 32:27
Recently a friend was encouraging her readers on Facebook with the knowledge that though “the circumstances will look ominous, (…) there is nothing, nothing, nothing too difficult for our God. (…) He is a God of the miraculous. The question is do you know Who your God is? Do you trust Him? If something looks too far gone for God to fix…It’s a set up for a miracle. That’s His specialty…or He would have asked you to take care of it.”
What rousing words, what a call to boldness, what a steady and faithful heart to have! I pray for such a heart and pursue it daily. But what about when we cannot rise, when our faith has crumbled and fear has overtaken us. Of course we long to be strong, steadfast and immovable in our faith, standing firm as great men and women of God who keep our eyes fixed on Jesus and not the waves; but there are times when a situation or person blindsides us and we are left like road-kill on the spiritual highway of life. We hear the vultures circling but we cannot rise; our bodies imbedded in the gravel, face flattened on the pavement and grit in our mouths, immobilized. We have not even the strength or faith to call out to God. We lay there, paralyzed, awaiting whatever may come. We want to believe but right then we cannot.
Yet words of courage, boldness and faith are not just for those who can say amen to them. Indeed it is just the opposite; they are for the very person who cannot see how it could be true. These are words for the broken. Dear heart, know that many before you have come to such a place, where despair overtakes faith and you cannot believe that God will come through. It’s a moment of tragic irony because it’s not that you have stopped believing that God is God but somehow you feel that maybe He has abandoned you to circumstances, that He has some reason to allow them to continue; and if that is so, even if it would make you stronger in the end, you just don’t want it, you cannot bear it. But you have no choice, it’s happening anyway. Dear heart, do not despair, even when our faith crumbles, He catches the pieces. God is not put off by our fear, our failure, our doubts. He will carry through with His plan to rescue us because of His love and for His glory and for our good. Sometimes it is only when we have given up believing that God seems to act. Other times it is only once we have passed through the valley of the shadow of death that we see He was with us all along; and then, when the ashes have cooled our faith begins to grow again. Either way, He will not let you go. If you are in that place of despair, where your faith has abandoned you and you cannot pray, this message is God’s heart to you. He sees you. He hears you. You are not forgotten. You are loved. And you will rise again.
